The cottage is set on the crest of a hill amidst open countryside in peaceful surroundings. A 360° panoramic view of the cottage and its surroundings can be seen here. There are many interesting walks along country lanes in the steep-sided wooded valleys around the cottage. The spring in the valley below the house runs (eventually) into the Dordogne river. In early summer, in particular, wild flowers of many varieties abound. A number of wild orchids - Bee Orchids, Fly Orchids and Spider Orchids amongst them - which are now rare in Britain - grow freely here. Nearly sixty different wild birds have been sighted. If you're very quiet, you might even see a red squirrel, a marten or a genet. The cottage is fully furnished and equipped for your holiday, to accommodate a maximum of six people. While the cottage is not fully wheelchair accessible, the accommodation is all on one level, so it is suitable for those who have problems with stairs. See the floorplan for more information. The accommodation comprises:- Living/dining room with large open fireplace fiited with wood burning stove (wood provided), television (UK channels), CD / cassette player / radio, easy chairs and dining table leading onto: Fitted kitchen area with sink, cupboards, gas cooker, toaster, electric kettle, microwave combination oven and large refrigerator with icebox One bedroom with double bed Two bedrooms with twin beds Sun terrace with extensive views, equipped with garden furniture, table and barbecue Shower room with shower and basin WC / Utility with hand basin, washing machine and laundry sink The cottage is fully equipped for self-catering, with the exception of bed linen, towels and tea-towels, which you are asked to provide. If you are flying, it may sometimes be possible to provide linen, towels etc. - please ask. Duvets and pillows are provided for the beds. A cot (without bedding) and two high chairs are also available - please ask at the time of booking your holiday. Clean, well-behaved pets welcome at no extra charge (whether dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs etc!) - there is plenty of open space around the cottage. For UK visitors, we can provide details of a local vet who will provide certification for re-entry into the UK at the end of your holiday, under the Pet Passport scheme. The Dordogne / Lot region is wonderful for holidays: great scenery, chateaux, food, wine and so on. We're sure you'll have a great holiday. Local Information [Local Icons] Foulon lies on the edge of the Causse de Gramat, an attractive unspoilt rugged landscape between the upper Lot and Dordogne valleys. The region offers much in scenic beauty, containing numerous mediaeval villages and towns, together with some superb chateaux - many set in dramatic locations. The picture above shows the nearby chateau of Vaillac (about 3km away), which sits high on the hillside above the village. The ancient name for the area is Quercy, which many believe to come from the Latin "Quercus" - an oak tree. Certainly there are a great number of oak trees in the area. The steep sided wooded valleys around the house and neighbouring villages offer a variety of walks. In May and June, particularly, there is a profusion of wild flowers, including many types of wild orchid. Nearby, the limestone rock has been formed into several caves with prehistoric cave paintings or spectacular rock formations. In the largest, the Gouffre de Padirac, you can take a boat trip on an underground river. Above ground, the Dordogne and Lot rivers offer fishing, swimming, canoeing or, if you're feeling lazy, boat rides. If you enjoy eating out, then you are spoilt for choice. There are many restaurants where you can enjoy the renowned cuisine of the area, either inexpensively or in style. Local specialities include truffles, lamb, cabecou (a kind of goat's cheese), walnuts and (of course) the local wine. A visit to the ancient city of Cahors, with its picturesque mediaeval bridge, narrow winding streets and bustling market is a must for most visitors. In contrast, the little town of Rocamadour, clinging to the cliff face below its monastery, is an important place of pilgrimage as well as an unforgettable sight. The small town of Labastide Murat, 2.5 kilometres away, provides local shopping facilities (supermarket, bank, butcher, charcuterie, garage etc.) plus a market twice a month. In high season a swimming pool (with separate adults' and children's pools) and tennis courts are available there, while there is a lake for fishing near by.
