The Olive gîte is the larger of the two gîtes; it has three bedrooms and sleeps six. The gîte has its own terrace and shared use of the garden and swimming pool. The large French windows of the Olive gîte and the gîte's south-facing view help create a bright and welcoming living room, which, with its stone fire place, tapestry and deep sofas provide a comfortable living space for you and your family. A second set of French windows lead you into the kitchen and dining area. The antique table and chairs in the dining area are in keeping with the age and style throughout the gîte. The kitchen combines a clean modern style with old rural French achieved by using contemporary units and some free-standing furniture decorated in the classic 'antique bleu'. The kitchen is fully equipped with a sink, hob, fridge, dishwasher, crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils and pots and pans. To minimise noise the clothes washing-machine is located upstairs in the cupboard housing the hot water tank. The original two-hundred-year-old stairs lead from the living room to the landing. The Olive gîte has three bedrooms; two good sized doubles with double beds and one much smaller bedroom with bunk beds, really only suitable for children. The bathroom has a bath with a shower over, a basin and loo. The Olive gîte has its own outdoor furniture on the terrace in front of the gîte overlooking the garden. The furniture consists of a wooden table with six wooden chairs, and a large parasol. The garden, woods and swimming-pool with its eight sun-loungers are communal. Local Information [Local Icons] The City of Carcassonne is the most impressive of all the Cathar castles in the Languedoc region of south-west France, and is within easy reach of the gîtes here at Mas de La Prade. The City of Carcassonne, only twenty minutes from our gîtes at Mas de La Prade, in the heart of the Languedoc region of south-west France, is one of the most outstanding examples of a fortified town, and undoubtedly the most famous of all the Cathar strongholds. It was recognised as such in 1997 when it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The City of Carcassonne has much to offer its visitors. Its narrow cobbled streets are filled with colourful restaurants and shops. For children, there are its ramparts and towers to climb, and for a truly authentic feel for the history of Carcassonne, an opportunity to watch one of the jousting tournaments held during the month of August. For their parents the 'Festival de Carcassonne' runs throughout the month of July and offers a large variety of theatre, dance, opera and concerts. For those who are lucky enough to be there on Bastille day, the City of Carcassonne puts on one of the best fireworks displays in the whole of France. Activity Information [Activity Icons] The climate, geography, history and culture of the Languedoc region of south-west France, along with its Cathar castles, make it one of the most interesting and enjoyable regions to visit in the whole of France; a perfect destination for a gîte holiday with a swimming-pool. The sea is only a forty five minute drive away, however, for those who prefer lakes and rivers with their shade and greenery, there is, most notably, the lake at Saint Ferréol in the Black Mountains, the Lac de la Cavayère near Carcassonne and the Aude river that runs from the Pyrenees down through Carcassonne to the sea. There are plenty of opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and canyoning on the higher and faster-flowing stretches of the Aude above Limoux. Alternatively, for those who wish for a more gentle pace, there is the calm and serenity of the Canal du Midi, a wide tree-lined canal that connects the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and passes through Carcassonne, on which there are many boats for hire by the day or for longer. The mountains of the Pyrenees to the south and the Black Mountains to the north provide fabulous locations for all sorts of outdoor sports and activities, ranging from walking, riding, cycling, skiing, golf and hot air ballooning to climbing, caving and even paragliding and hang gliding.
