Safety Jacket legislation for Vehicles
It was made compulsory for all vehicles to carry a safety jacket or
vest and warning triangle from 1 July 2008. Anyone found to not be complying
with the new requirements could be subject to a fine of 90 Euros.
The aim is to improve the safety of road users who find themselves in
an emergency situation such as breakdown or an accident. This means
drivers are more visible to other road users when exiting their vehicle.
Use of safety jackets or vests:
Safety jackets or vests, which must comply with current legislation,
must be worn by drivers before exiting their vehicle; the vehicle must
be stationary either on the hard shoulder or on the side of the road.
Safety jackets must be manufactured in accordance with the Directive
89/686/CEE, as long as the jacket bears the CE mark it should comply
to this standard.
Instructions for use of the triangle:
It is required that the warning triangle should be carried on board
all vehicles. The warning triangle must be placed on the road surface
upon exiting the vehicle at a distance of at least 30 metres from the
vehicle or the obstacle. The triangle must be manufactured in accordance
to the Geneva regulation number 27, this means that it will be marked
with an E and 27R.
NB:
The use of hazard lights is compulsory if the vehicle is fitted with
these.
